So today the Hub is talking about how Fantasy is making a come back! This would be fantastic in my
opinion. I love Tamora Pierce and all the other wonderful authors that make fantasy worlds for us to dive into. Right now I'm half way through Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson and don't want to put the book down and go back to work, but I don't see pure fantasy worlds coming back here in Aurora. Here most of my teens are asking for real life situations in their fiction. Books like 13 Reasons Why or Suicide Notes haven't stayed on my shelves for any period of time since they came out. But slowly over the last year I've started to see a trend towards Fantasy diluted in the real world. These books are the most asked for. They want to try the fantasy, but changing everything they know to be true can make it hard for them to read a book (especially if it has as many characters as Game of Thrones or the second Inkheart book). Hush, Hush, Paranormalcy, Starcrossed, and Strange Angels are just a few of the books that are being asked for on a constant basis here.
But these books aren't technically Fantasy. They have elements of a Fantasy like supernatural powers, creatures of make believe, etc. but each is grounded in our world. They are more Paranormal then anything else. And with shows on TV like Haven, Supernatural, Sanctuary, Vampire Diaries, and Being Human can you see why the teens love this genre?
In short I think Paranormal is where we are at right now and pure Fantasy (while I love it) is still a long way off from making its come back.
